ASIAN PERSUASION

Top Asian figures are sweeping the fashion world and I have to say, it’s about time! From talented Asian-American designers getting acknowledged for surpassing expectations to Armani opening shops in China, it is certainly an exciting and refreshing change of pace for the industry.

Recently, Vogue shot an editorial for their December issue, styled by my favorite creative head, Grace Coddington, which showcases a new outlook on beauty. It features models of various Asian ethnicities such as Liu Wen, Du Juan, and Tao Okamoto. I am in love with this spread not so much for the style per se but rather the new meaning it gives to the traditional and often erroneous definition of beauty in our world.

Although this change is refreshing, I have to agree with NY mag columnist James Lim that "it always seems easier for magazines to lump the girls in a feature like this, feel like the acknowledgment has been made, and then revert back to their usual ultra-white mix of models in subsequent issues. It will be interesting to see if and how Vogue will support these statements in forthcoming issues." Hopefully this isn't a one-time spread and it will be the leading force in diversifying the spectrum of skin colors seen on the runways and magazine covers.

The December Free People catalog is a great example of how perfect styling and an amazing landscape can come together in photos to produce a unique and beautiful mixture. FIRST ARMANI STORE IN CHINA

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani is entering the Chinese market with a new online store that opened Friday (11/26), and it is one of the first such initiatives in China by a major fashion brand.

This news is not only exciting for the global fashion market as a whole, but also personally exciting for myself, as a Chinese American, to know that brands like Armani are entering the Asian market.

"In view of the increasing enthusiasm for online shopping and the growing importance of the Chinese market, I have decided to open an Emporio Armani online store in China," said Armani.

And Armani was right about the Chinese enthusiasm for online shopping. In fact, online retail sales in China, which has the world's largest web population of at least 420 million, soared 117 percent last year to 39 billion dollars (29 billion euros), according to iResearch, a Beijing-based research firm.

DESIGNER WORLD AIDS SHIRTS

Project Runway Alum Mondo Guerra is partnering with online retailer Piperlime to raise money for AIDs research by designing two limited edition t-shirts to coincide with World AIDs Day.

For each shirt sold, $20 will be donated to amFAR, an organization that focuses on AIDS research.

One shirt shows a tree with a single heart hanging from a branch and the other features a colorful skull in the Day of the Dead theme that dominated Guerra's final collection on the TV show.
